If you could ask...

Category: Let's talk

Post 1 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Thursday, 12-Apr-2007 9:00:41

I don't know if this topic will get anywhere, but, the idea is, if you could ask an expert something, what would you ask?

Any question, any subject.

If you have an answer to give, please put the post number of the question.

I'll start.

Question to a sighted person.

When you look at something what characteristics make it beautiful or ugly or disgusting?
For example, I've heard it said that the face of a child is beautiful. Why?
I've heard it said that a cockroach is ugly. Why?
I've heard it said that a pile of vomit is disgusting, why?

I'd ask John Surtees how he was able to make the often tricky transition from racing on 2 wheels, to four, and become champion in both disciplines.

Wow. This tricky. I'll post later, when I think of something to say.

I love beer, learn to spell, you hipocrytte! Anyway, I would like to ask an expert candy-maker how Pop Rocks are made.

Post 7 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Thursday, 12-Apr-2007 20:10:25

Okay, kids, settle down. <lol>

Shay, to answer your question, I am they.

Gryffindor Angel, here's an answer to your question.

from http://science.howstuffworks.com/question114.htm

"How do Pop Rocks candy work?

"Pop Rocks" is an extremely cool candy to some people, but to other people it is just plain weird and they won't touch the stuff. Regardless of which view
you subscribe to, you have to admit that it is definitely a technology candy -- nothing in nature works like Pop Rocks do!

So how do they work? One of the amazing things about Pop Rocks is that they are
patented.
That means that you can go read the patent and see exactly how they work. You can
click here to see the patent --
this page is a synopsis, and if you click the "View Images" tag at the top of the page you can look at scanned images of the actual patent. Page 4 is the
key page.

Here's the basic idea. Hard candy (like a lollypop or a Jolly Rancher) is made from sugar, corn syrup, water and flavoring. You heat the ingredients together
and boil the mixture to drive off all of the water. Then you let the temperature rise. What you are left with is a pure sugar syrup at about 300 degrees
F (150 degrees C). When it cools, you have hard candy.

To make Pop Rocks, the hot sugar mixture is allowed to mix with carbon dioxide gas at about 600 pounds per square inch (psi). The carbon dioxide gas forms
tiny, 600-psi bubbles in the candy. Once it cools, you release the pressure and the candy shatters, but the pieces still contain the high-pressure bubbles
(look at a piece with a magnifying glass to see the bubbles).

When you put the candy in your mouth, it melts (just like hard candy) and releases the bubbles with a loud POP! What you are hearing and feeling is the
600-psi carbon dioxide gas being released from each bubble.

I'd like to ask an animal psychologist what is going through a cat's mind when it runs around the house for seemingly no reason. Also, what are they thinking about when they just sit staring off into space.

Post 10 by Raskolnikov (I'll have the last word, thank you!) on Saturday, 14-Apr-2007 0:23:42

God, who are you? Where are you? Leave me a PM if you have time to answer. Thank you.

Post 11 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Saturday, 14-Apr-2007 4:00:51

Note to Liebra Lady:
They are probably saying: "damn am I horney, damn am I hungry, damn, where's something to kill" when they are running around the house.
When they are staring into space they are probably saying "damn am I stoned. Where does she keep the cat nip?"
Good question, wish I were an animal psychologist.

Note to Raskolnikov:
Hi, this ain't God, it's just another person like you.
God probably won't send you a pm, because he doesn't work that way. But, that doesn't mean he doesn't care about your search for truth. Because, I suspect he does care quite a bit. And, who knows, maybe he will send you a pm and hasn't sent me one because I haven't asked.
So, from one mere mortal to another, hang in there buddy, and some day you'll find that answer you are looking for.
BTW: I don't think it'll have anything to do with animal crackers, but, ask Becky, she's the animal expert.

I've a question who let the gangsta rapper in here.

Why does coffee send me to sleep and make me dream of aeroplanes
Stevie

Post 13 by dream lady (move over school!) on Monday, 16-Apr-2007 6:54:33

My question would be: Why isn't there answers when you need them? I mean, when things happen, and important decisions have to be made, where are the answers?

Post 14 by kgs4674forever (Zone BBS is my Life) on Friday, 20-Apr-2007 19:53:54

Hmm, I can't think of anything at the moment, but to answer the question about cats, there probably just nuts. I had two cats at one time, so I know kind of what they do.

To answer your question about coffee, it makes you go to sleep because your body has become acustomed to caffene the stimulant in such things as coffee.

Post 16 by lauralou (Account disabled) on Monday, 30-Apr-2007 20:35:18

yes, i'd like to know how people are hot or ugly, is it their nose? i just dont know, i guess being blind we just dont understand that kinda stuff, but how can someone be ..., damn its hard to explain, butlike, i hope you people know what i'm talking about, because i sure as hell dont, ok so i guess maybe hiow can one person be all that different from the next, ok, i dont know if that made any sense at all...

Post 17 by Chicken Scratch (Account disabled) on Monday, 30-Apr-2007 22:31:04

this is probably a dumb question. But why is it that the first thing people say is "he (she) is so hot!"? And then they might love that person because they're "hot" but they don't really know what his/her personality is like? I guess what I'm trying to say is why do people care so much about how pretty, how ugly someone is?

Post 18 by blbobby (Ooo you're gona like this!) on Monday, 30-Apr-2007 22:32:31

Yes, lauren, (not laura), it does make sense. Why two people can stand side by side, and the only thing you know about them is how they look. One may be popular and have lots of friends, while the other might be lonely, with few friends: all because of their looks.

Don't understand it, but, it's the way things are. Usually, as time goes by, and the two people reveal more and more of their personalities, then things might even out.

Damn, I don't know if I'm making sense now, either. Oh well.

Post 19 by Resonant (Find me alive.) on Tuesday, 01-May-2007 0:44:29

Not really in the theme of the thread, but Bob's comment sparked off something in my head that I read a while back, that the reason people fear and fight and resist visible aging is that we resemble our personality, and the life we've lived, more with age. I like that. We start with a randomly genetically compiled appearance, and the people around us respond to that, but it's not of our making. As we get old, we get laughter lines, or frown wrinkles, the pinching around the mouth that shows if we've spent a lot of time being stern or stressed. Our bodies and muscles and veins show the sort of life we've lived, and our eyes have a lot of experience to reflect, and that absolutely terrifies us.
Just thought I'd throw that out there.

Post 20 by lauralou (Account disabled) on Monday, 07-May-2007 23:25:03

yes, bob, you did make sense, and i agree completely, thanx

I'd ask Arnold his secrets to building a great body. Don't lie Arnold now!

Post 22 by Kyra194 (Generic Zoner) on Tuesday, 08-May-2007 0:27:39

well, one thing I'd like to ask would be: Are people's personalities formed when they're born, or does what happens to them in their lives make them a certain way? For example, if someone was mean and self-centered, were they just born that way or did something happen to make them act like that? I think it might be a little of both, but i'm not sure.

Post 23 by lauralou (Account disabled) on Saturday, 12-May-2007 17:31:23

i think its what decisions they make kyra, or how they are treated, or how they treat others, your personality grows with you
when you're like... 6 months old do you have much of a personality? yes, you have some, but not as much as you do when you get older, so... yeah

Post 25 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Sunday, 20-May-2007 21:26:31

hmmmm, I think i'd like the opportunity to ask some people to justify their actions...
Like ask Stalin why he sent half a million people to labour camps or something...i'd like to ask peple for justfyable reasons for their actions.

Post 26 by OjosDeMiCorazon (That's how I roll!) on Monday, 21-May-2007 1:34:37

A question for all.
Once one falls in love, do they ever fall out of love? Or does that love simply remain hidden for the rest of ones life.

Post 27 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Monday, 21-May-2007 8:40:46

I fell in love once, but he changed, and then he wasn't the guy i fell in love with anymore.
I don't have any love for him anymore

Post 29 by Empress Lana (Account disabled) on Monday, 21-May-2007 16:21:59

Um, a what picks up phone signals? Um, ok, I like what your doing here. Um, can people feel literally when they are being manipulated sometimes? Yeah, didn't make much sense but, there it is.

Post 30 by OjosDeMiCorazon (That's how I roll!) on Tuesday, 22-May-2007 0:46:56

Galileo
You might not still have love for him, but one can argue that you fell in love with a particular type of person. And yes, people do change, but if he had remained the same and been himself, isn't it true that whether you were together or not, your love for him might be everlasting?
Just a thought.

How were braille books made in the 60's? Mhy teacher had books that were made a long time ago but they didn't have computers and embossers but the paper looked like regular braille book paper that you would see today. Oh yeah and those giant braille dictionaries made back in the 70's. That must've taken a long time to make.

Post 32 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Wednesday, 23-May-2007 15:41:36

Urm, they used manual braille, like percanses i suspect
to the second lat poster,
I fell in love with a certain type of person. and i think that had he stayed the same, i'd still love him now, but had he notchanged, i'd not e with the wonderful guy i'm with at present.
fait works in strange ways.

I'd like to ask biologists and anthropoligists and archaeologists why Africans have longer vocal cords and can hit higher and lower notes than white people. I think the same goes for latinos because Yma Sumac had an 11-octave range... that's a whole fucking piano!

Post 34 by OjosDeMiCorazon (That's how I roll!) on Thursday, 24-May-2007 0:48:36

well, I'm a vocalist, and I can tell you that it has to do with history.
Over time, Africans and Latinos have been subjected to sing and speak louder, in outdoor open spaces. White folks, especially in Europe, were vocally held to indoor churches and temples for quite some time. Over time, history adapts humans, as a result, our vocal tamber is different. So there.

Post 35 by Perestroika (Her Swissness) on Thursday, 24-May-2007 2:38:45
